Paint Shawl —Ravellenics 2018

Pintura a rayas otoñales

After my last awful results in 2016 Ravellenic Games I couldn't do anything else but try again this year with another shawl. Pig-headed to the end!

However, this time we have excellent news: shawl finished on time! Having chosen a much simpler and easier design may have something to do, I won't deny it, but bear in mind that we had less time for knitting because Winter Games are a week shorter than Summer Games.

Autumnal Striped Paint

Since I opened my Secret Santa Swap I knew I was participating with this gradating yarn which is perfect for a triangular and simple self-striped shawl. No sooner said than done: on February 9th I cast it on and eleven days, 320 rows and 160 stitches later I cast it off. Test passed!

Sunbathing in the "garden"

The pattern is a piece of cake and you can find it on Katia Yarns site for free: knit four rows in Stockinette stitch and then another four in reverse Stockinette (accordion stitch), increasing one stitch at the end of every odd row. The result is a careful and deceptive asymmetry which is appealing and interesting enough to knit, but not as lopsided as to scare away a finicky symmetrical knitter like me. ;-)

Paint Shawl
Everlasting elegance

It turned out huge as you can see on the picture above —sorry about the sloppy low-budget arrangement, this is not a deceitful Pinterest or Instagram account, this is real life. Not only bigger than me (which is not difficult to achieve) but also longer than my bed, a vintage wide single! The shawl measures 180 x 70 cm (71 x 27.5 in) relaxed after blocking.

The pattern is carefully planned and calculated for this skein yardage. My hands were shaking when I was casting off the shawl, not knowing if I would have eough yarn to finish it. After 40 complete repeats all that was left were 7 cm (barely 3 inches!) of yarn. Below you can see both ends: the longer is the cast on tail and the shorter the cast off one —picture was taken before blocking and waving in ends:

And now on to my Olympic schedule:

09/02: Cast on. Couldn’t watch Opening Ceremony live (thanks Spanish broadcasters!) but nevertheless shed a tear when I saw both Korean teams under the Unification flag.
10/02: Morning: went to the beach —love the beach in winter. Evening: cosy knitting time at home. 120 rows, no medal.
11/02: Had visitors for dinner, little time for knitting. 20 rows, no medal (49th in skiathlon).
12/02: only 18 rows (168 rows in total). Need to speed up or else…
13/02: 24 rows (192 rows in total). No medal (7th in halfpipe).
14/02: St Valentine’s Day / Ash Wednesday. 15 rows (207 rows in total). No gifts.
15/02: BRONZE! 3rd Winter Olympics medal ever for us (1972, 1992 & 2018). Snowboard cross. 14 rows (221 rows in total).
16/02: Finally some quality knitting time. 45 rows (266 rows in total).
17/02: ANOTHER BRONZE! 4th historic medal (Figure skating). 14 neverending rows (280 in total).
18/02: 20 painful long rows (300 in total). Almost there!
19/02: 15 rows (315 in total).
20/02: 5 rows (320 in total). Bind off. 23h GMT+1. FINISHED!

Flexed accordion

I have enjoyed working with this yarn, it is thick (at least for me) but not bulky; I like that the shawl is reversible and I don't need to pay attention to it when getting dressed; I absolutely love the colour gradation, it is very beautiful; moreover, the colour change seems to be precisely calculated to fall in between blocks and not in the middle, but—

Paint Shawl
Proof of offence

Warning to knitters and to my future self: plenty of salt water to soak this shawl because this yarn bleeds a lot. Even after taking these (and other) measures, the shawl kept bleeding while drying/blocking and I suppose it will do again whenever I wash it. Sadly this is not the first time I come across this issue with this brand wool & acrylic blend in dark colours. :-(

Bye-bye

By the way, I just noticed all my participations in the Ravellenics, up to three, were in the Shawl category. Are we setting up a new tradition on this blog like celebrating my Saint day with socks? Maybe... See you in 2020 and check it out. ;-)

Meanwhile, let me enjoy the cold temperatures we still have around here with my newly finished shawl.
Thank you so much for being there.
Happy March!

  1. Wow, love this shawl. Those colors are fabulous even if they bleed a lot. I enjoyed the photos so much.

Winter is back so I'm savoring everyday and wearing my knit socks as often as possible.
    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. Thank you very much! I enjoyed knitting it as well and am wearing it at all times despite being a tad too warm for our weather, because soon the spring will fall upon us for a few weeks and then it will suddenly be summer. Also trying not to think much about the bleeding and the spoiled towels —I'd rather take it as an interesting experience. ;-)

      Have a lovely weekend!

  2. Happy March! As before, this shawl is so beautiful. I love its "bulkiness" and colorway. When I look at it, it's the perfect blend of your color faves and mine. From muted to jewel tones. Love, love.

I would love to be able to really, really knit. Like to the point where it would be a mindless act while relaxing. I've always admired people who had this yarn basket that they reached into and grabbed the project whilst watching tv. My SIL used to work at an university that encouraged knitting! Seriously, the professors and students knitted while listening to lectures and such. Just the thought of it...*full smile*

    1. Thank you so much, Libby! I loved working on it and the colours reminded me of you as well. :-) You would be able to knit and crochet again as soon as you're free from other very important tasks, so don't worry! Knitting is very relaxing for me, I also do it while watching TV or a podcast, and it helps me to have my mind occupied and focused. Couldn't ask for more, to be honest. As for that University, I'd love to know which one was it! Knitting while attending class must be just amazing.
      Have a great week!

  3. Me tienes absolutamente anonadada. ¡Gracias, Gracias! ¿No habrás batido algún récord?

    1. ¡Gracias a ti, Dácil!
      Besote.
