Después de una semana para olvidar, el domingo tuve una revelación. Quien sigue este diario desde hace tiempo sabe que tengo entre manos una
colcha de ganchillo antigua que nunca tengo ganas de terminar. Además de hacérseme tediosa a más no poder, porque es una labor pesada, tenía el problema de no saber cómo acabarla. Se trata de una muestra en hexágono que se cose, no como todos los hexágonos lado con lado, sino mitad de un lado con mitad opuesta del lado de la otra pieza. De esa forma se consigue que el dibujo forme molinillos (se ha de coser obligatoriamente, no se pueden unir las piezas mientras se teje). Sin embargo, debido a esa peculiaridad los bordes resultan altamente irregulares y dado que el patrón que ha pasado de la generación anterior a la mía ha sido una simple muestra de la que he sacado los puntos contándolos, no hay nada escrito que me indique cómo se ha de terminar. Tengo entre 100 y 150 hexágonos guardados, algunos sueltos, otros cosidos en tiras, otros cosidos al cuerpo principal, sin saber qué hacer con ellos. ¿Cómo resuelvo las esquinas? ¿Cómo se redondean? ¿Cómo relleno los huecos para igualar un poco los bajos? ¿Hay que hacer algo especial para el cabecero? ¿Qué borde le vendría bien? Son preguntas que llevo haciéndome desde 2.009, cuando descubrí la colcha a medio hacer en el fondo del arcón de mi madre.
This past Sunday I had a revelation to end a horrible week. Those of you who follow this blog from the beginning or so know about my pinwheel vintage bedspread that I seem to never finish. Aside from being a very long and tedious project, I didn't know how to finish it. It's made of sewn hexagons, nothing particular in this, but you don't sew hexagons side to side: you sew half of the side of first hexagon to the opposite half of the side of second hexagon (does anybody follow me?). That is the way you get the pinwheel effect. To make it "easier" you cannot join the hexagons as you go, you must sew them. So due to this particular way of joining, the borders are extremely irregular and I don't have the official pattern as the crocheted hexagons were past onto me without instructions. I have around 100 or 150 of them, some single, some sewn in stripes, some attached to the old bedspread and I don't know what to do with them. What do I do with the corners? How to make them round? How to fill the gaps? Should I make something special for the pillow side? What kind of edging? I've been wondering all of these since I saw the beadspread in the bottom of the chest mum has in her bedroom in 2009.

A lo largo de estos dos años, entre manta y tapete, en ratitos libres, estancias en el hospital, en el verano, he ido haciendo las piezas que me faltaban con la ayuda inestimable de mi madre. Entre ambas hemos llenado un buen cesto y:
1. Averigüé el patrón, el hilo y el ganchillo: con perlé del nº 8 y ganchillo del 9/10 mis nuevos hexágonos se ajustaban a los viejos.
2. Las piezas están hechas, a falta de algún relleno de última hora. Coserlas es otro cantar...
3. Sigo sin dar con el esquema perfecto que me permita redondear simétricamente los picos. ¡Arg!
4. Peeero ¡he descubierto cómo se hace el borde!
During these two years I have been crocheting the remaining parts between a blanket and a doily, in my spare time, being at the hospital, in the summer, with the help of mum. The two of us have filled a basket of hexagons and:
1. I found out the pattern, yarn and hook: with perle #8 and 1 mm hook my hexagons were the same size as the old ones.
2. All pieces are done unless there is a last minute surprise. Sewing them is another story.
3. Still haven't found the perfect pattern for making round symmetrical corners!
4. But--- I found out the perfect edging!

He aquí mi revelación: el domingo por la noche, después de un ajetreado fin de semana, estando en mi rinconcito de tejido veraniego tuvimos una visita. Una antigua vecina del barrio se pasó a saludar, y dado que era ya de noche cuando se despidió y vive sola, nos ofrecimos a acompañarla hasta su casa. Una vez allí quiso invitarnos a subir y... ¡sorpresa! "Mi" colcha estaba sobre "su" cama, terminada, con su borde y sus picos redondeados que no arrastraban por el suelo. ¡Menuda alegría más grande! Pedí permiso para toquetearla a mi antojo y la miré y remiré, tomé nota mental de cómo rellenar esos huecos imposibles, cómo alinear el cabecero y qué tipo de puntilla queda bien para el remate. Solo me faltó echarle fotos.
So this was my revelation: on Sunday evening, after a difficult weekend, we had a visit in our secret summer place for knitting. A lady from our old neighbourhood came to visit and when it became dark, we offered to walk her home. Once there she wanted us to go in and surprise! "My" bedspread was covering "her" bed, finished with a tiny nice edging and round corners that didn't reach the floor. I was so happy! I asked for permission to touch and study it and took note of how those impossible gaps were filled, how the pillow side was made and which kind of trim had been used. I didn't take any photo though.
Tengo intención de hacerla exactamente igual, pues algo me dice que esta colcha es el diseño original y lo que yo he heredado de mi tía es una copia. Mi colcha estaba sin acabar puesto que estaba preparada para ponerle un volante de tela alrededor. Los hexágonos quedarían ocultos bajo el volante y listo. Eran los 70. Mi madre desechó ese diseño y quiso hacerla completa de ganchillo, pero no supo cómo y la abandonó. Con una niña pequeña y trabajando a destajo, no tuvo tiempo de más. Eran los 80. Y ahora, al cabo de los años, hemos dado con la diseñadora original: la señora María, la madre (ya fallecida) de esta vieja vecina que fue quien realizó esta preciosa colcha que vi el domingo hace más de 60 años y después enseñó a mi tía a hacer la muestra hexagonal y a coserlas para darles forma de molinillo. Y he averiguado todo esto por acompañar a una señora mayor a su casa. ¿No es una suerte maravillosa? :-)
I want to make it exactly the same, something makes me think this one is the original design and what I've inherited from my aunt is just a copy of it. Mine was unfinished as it was supposed to be attached to a flounce and the hexagons will be hidden under the fabric. That was in the 70's! Mum didn't like that and tried to make it just crocheted but didn't know how. At the time she was working hard and had a little girl to take care of. She couldn't give the beadspread a second of her time. That was in the 80's. And now, after so many years, we found the original designer: auntie Maria, the (now deceased) mother of this old neighbour lady, who was the one who crocheted this beautiful bedspread that I saw on Sunday evening more than 60 years ago. Later, she taught my aunt how to make the hexagon and how to sew them so they look like pinwheels. And I knew all of this just for being kind and walk an old lady home. Aren't I lucky? :-)
