Pinwheel Bedspread project - 2nd step

This past Sunday I had a revelation to end a horrible week. Those of you who follow this blog from the beginning or so know about my pinwheel vintage bedspread that I seem to never finish. Aside from being a very long and tedious project, I didn't know how to finish it. It's made of sewn hexagons, nothing particular in this, but you don't sew hexagons side to side: you sew half of the side of first hexagon to the opposite half of the side of second hexagon (does anybody follow me?). That is the way you get the pinwheel effect. To make it "easier" you cannot join the hexagons as you go, you must sew them. So due to this particular way of joining, the borders are extremely irregular and I don't have the official pattern as the crocheted hexagons were past onto me without instructions. I have around 100 or 150 of them, some single, some sewn in stripes, some attached to the old bedspread and I don't know what to do with them. What do I do with the corners? How to make them round? How to fill the gaps? Should I make something special for the pillow side? What kind of edging? I've been wondering all of these since I saw the beadspread in the bottom of the chest mum has in her bedroom in 2009.

Pinwheel hexagons
June 2009

¡Arg!
4. Peeero ¡he descubierto cómo se hace el borde!

During these two years I have been crocheting the remaining parts between a blanket and a doily, in my spare time, being at the hospital, in the summer, with the help of mum. The two of us have filled a basket of hexagons and:

1. I found out the pattern, yarn and hook: with perle #8 and 1 mm hook my hexagons were the same size as the old ones.
2. All pieces are done unless there is a last minute surprise. Sewing them is another story.
3. Still haven't found the perfect pattern for making round symmetrical corners!
4. But--- I found out the perfect edging!

Pinwheel hexagons
December 2009

¡sorpresa! Solo me faltó echarle fotos.

So this was my revelation: on Sunday evening, after a difficult weekend, we had a visit in our secret summer place for knitting. A lady from our old neighbourhood came to visit and when it became dark, we offered to walk her home. Once there she wanted us to go in and surprise! "My" bedspread was covering "her" bed, finished with a tiny nice edging and round corners that didn't reach the floor. I was so happy! I asked for permission to touch and study it and took note of how those impossible gaps were filled, how the pillow side was made and which kind of trim had been used. I didn't take any photo though.

I want to make it exactly the same, something makes me think this one is the original design and what I've inherited from my aunt is just a copy of it. Mine was unfinished as it was supposed to be attached to a flounce and the hexagons will be hidden under the fabric. That was in the 70's! Mum didn't like that and tried to make it just crocheted but didn't know how. At the time she was working hard and had a little girl to take care of. She couldn't give the beadspread a second of her time. That was in the 80's. And now, after so many years, we found the original designer: auntie Maria, the (now deceased) mother of this old neighbour lady, who was the one who crocheted this beautiful bedspread that I saw on Sunday evening more than 60 years ago. Later, she taught my aunt how to make the hexagon and how to sew them so they look like pinwheels. And I knew all of this just for being kind and walk an old lady home. Aren't I lucky? :-)

2001-2011

Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn

Today it would have been our 10th anniversary but the Lord thought otherwise and it's killing me. You always identified yourself with tough guys either from real life, such as Humphrey Bogart, or from fiction, as Wolverine. However for me you always were a good-natured reveller with the biggest heart in the world, the only one who could 'tame' this crazy girl. Those two from the pic are both of us. Not in vain everybody told us we just looked like an old married couple, quarrelling for silly things. Do you remember that? Thank you very much for your patience and love all these years, especially for that last gaze and that last kiss. I pray for you everyday. Please take care of me. Love you.

Bee Bib

This bib was made for Pauet (nickname for Pau), the greatest sleepyhead baby in the world and my friends' son. They sometimes visit my blog -- or so I am told -- so I didn't want to spoil the surprise. But now that the bib is with them I can show it to you here.

Bee Bib
buzz buzz

I just want to add that I love the bee design and I have one embroidery needle less in my sewing box: it turned out all rusty! Anybody knows of rustproof needles for clumsy crafters like me?

Indiecita & cross stitch

I said that now that the summer is here the season is over for me. However, I took some days off from work due to medical reasons and found a quiet little place for knitting therapy with nice breeze during the afternoons. I even need to wear a cardigan! So everyday, after the Tour stage is finished, I put my needles, yarn and pattern in a bag and go to stay there until the sun sets.

Indiecita
Pure wool, silky touch

I have two projects on my hands right now but I can't tell you about them because they are surprise presents. One of them has to do with the cross stitch motif bible, the other one with this gorgeous yarn that I got in the mail yesterday from En Punto y Alma. I will write here as much as I can, but I won't make any promise... ;-)

This is the last yarny project of the season. From now on I will only take photos and sort all that unclassified stuff from winter and last years. It's getting really hot down here and there's no rush, no deadline to meet. It is time now to make some progress with my cross-stitch and catch up with some pending books. :-)

Lace-top Camisole
Wasp waist!

I am in love with Japanese patterns. Not only I think they are exquisitely beautiful but also they are meant for me: I don't need to make any modifications! Sadly, it's just the opposite with American and European patterns. I have a tiny body, like Japanese girls. hehe

Jajaja.

Did I say how much I love it? However, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I think Mlle. Alex knows what I am talking about. I bought these skeins at a Chinese shop (they are very popular in Spain for their really cheap prices). They are made in Spain and their quality is good but they have no dye lot! You can't see it but actually the top is two coloured! lol

Hake fillet

A summery dish with the taste of the sea! A good way to start this new and hideous season: hake fillet in a parsley and wine sauce called "green sauce". This recipe is widely known in Spain and can be found on many cooking Spanish websites and books. This one is the recipe we usually cook at home. Spanish only, sorry. I would try to translate it if someone is really interested. ;-) This time we replaced clams with peeled shrimps and used a smaller quantity of wine to make it milder. The tablecloth from the 70's is still as good as new and used often. :-)

Holden "Esmeralda" Shawlette

This project has been finished in record time as a result of desperation, anxiety and the need of making something beautiful with that soft yarn that I got from the Christmas swap. Thanks to Eva and her suggestions (which also are Susi's suggestions) I had the inspiration I needed and started to knit. It was finished in just one week!

Holden Shawl
It wasn't photographer's best day...

I love this pattern. Is is easy but not too simple, beautiful and eye-catching but not complicated. This yarn is awesome (thank you again, Ana!): soft, warm and cool at the same time, non-itchy and best of all, it smells of herd. Yes, you read correctly. As it is 70% wool, it retains the smell and it didn't tone down after knitting and washing. Probably other people would be uncomfortable with it but I really love it and makes me feel good. It reminds me of my childhood and my uncle Francisco's goat herd. :-)

Holden Shawl
... fortunately not a whole blurry day either...

¡A aguas!
Jajaja.

And I didn't forget the best part: it is green! Variegated green! Is there anything better?
I knitted it while watching another soap opera and named it after it, also inspired by the colour, but my dear mother preferred to name this shawl "Loose-Leaf Lettuce" because that is what the shawl looked like before blocking it: a pretty green lettuce with curly lacy ruffles at the edge. lol!

Holden Shawl
... and some pics were finally taken!

Yarn: one skein of green 70% wool 30% acrylic Regia Hand-dye Effect.
Needles: 5.00 mm (US 8).
Size: 180 x 85 cm (roughly 71'x 33.5')
Pattern: Holden Shawlette by Mindy Wilkes. Free PDF with chart (Ravelry link).
Modifications: Started lace pattern at 141 sts (2 repetitions instead of 3) as suggested by Susi and Eva. After row 38 started knitting again from row 23 to 38 repeating [ ] pattern as many times as needed. In the end I had the same stitches pattern stated but lace part was bigger and St st smaller.

This has been my last winter project. I have some UFOs and some FOs to take photos but that will be when summer ends. Now it's time to make some pretty cool garments to face heat.
Thank you everyone for all your supporting comments on the blog and e-mails. I hope to slowly overcome my issues and let time heal my wounds. Baby steps with the help of all. :-)
