Autumn Sweater

Todavía ando un poco pachucha y depre pero es que si no actualizo a menudo se me acabará acumulando el trabajo. Antes que nada quería daros las gracias por las felicitaciones, parecerá una tontería pero es que ni mi familia ni mis amigos (excepto dos o tres) me felicitaron porque fue una ocasión un poco triste, y o bien se olvidaron, o bien decidieron pasarlo por alto. Así que ¡mil gracias por animarme el día!

También me gustaría saludar a mis nuevas lectoras: Sue, Naty, Alex... ¡encantada! Espero que lleguemos a conocernos. :-D

I am still under the weather and a bit depressed but if I don't post often my work is going to pile up! First of all I would like to say thanks to you girls for your congratulations, it could seem silly but I didn't get any 'happy birthday' from my family or friends since it was a sad time and they forgot or chose not to talk about it. So a big thank you to you for cheering me up!

Also I would like to greet my new readers: Sue, Naty, Alex... pleased to meet you all! Hope we can get to know each other. :-D

Y ahora al tema. La rebeca marcha estupendamente, y mis otros proyectos... pues también marchan:
- colcha: tengo que coser todos los hexágonos *brrrr*
- manta de estrella: necesito motivación, ¿algún bebé a la vista por ahí? ;-)
- calcetines: he terminado uno y me encanta, falta empezar la pareja.
- bolso concha: tengo que coser el forro *lalalala*

Y por supuesto, tengo que sacar fotos de todo. Pereza es mi segundo nombre...

Now off to business. The cardigan is coming along nicely and still in progress, as well as my other WIPs:
- bedspread: need to sew all hexagons together *shudders*
- starghan: need motivation to finish it, any baby in view out there? ;-)
- socks: finished one and loving it, need to start the pair.
- shell bag: need to sew the lining *sneaks away*

And of course, need to take pictures of everything. Laziness is my middle name...

Trying it on

Durante los últimos meses - porque le gusta tomárselo con calma - mi madre me ha estado tejiendo un jersey con ochos y hojas y por fin lo ha terminado. No le gusta hacer labores en verano porque hace un calor horrible y como no nos gusta el aire acondicionado cuando llega mayo para y retoma las agujas o el ganchillo en septiembre. Pero esta vez, cuando buscó las piezas del jersey para coserlo se dio cuenta de que las mangas eran demasiado anchas para mis brazos - soy delgada y tengo los brazos muy flacos - y el cuello demasiado largo. Le tocó deshacerlos e improvisar las mangas pero lo consiguió, y el jersey ha quedado estupendo, como podeis ver. Demasiado grueso para el otoño cálido que estamos teniendo este año pero perfecto para los fríos días de invierno. ¡Gracias, mamá! Es toda una artista, todavía me queda un largo camino para alcanzarla.

These past months - because she likes to take her time - my mother has been knitting a sweater for me with cables and leaves and finally she finished it. She doesn't like to craft in summer because it is awfully hot and we don't like a.c. so she stops around May and takes her needles/hooks up again on September. But this time, when she looked for the sweater parts to sew them together she noticed the sleeves were too wide for my arms - I am slim but my arms are really thin - and the neck too long. She needed to frog them and improvise the sleeve pattern to make it narrower but she did it! And the sweater is gorgeous, as you can see. Too thick for this warm autumn we are having this year but perfect for the cold winter days. Thank you, mum!! She is so skilled, I still have a long way ahead of me to catch her up.

Por cierto, ¿recordais la manta Rainbow? El bebé de mi prima nació en septiembre y se la envié. Pronto iré de visita para el bautizo y espero tener la oportunidad de hacerle una foto a los dos juntitos y acaramelados. :-)

By the way, do you remember the Rainbow Afghan? My cousin's baby was born on September and I sent the blanket to her. I will go visiting soon for his christening and maybe I will get a chance to take a photo of them cosy & together. :-)

Birthday

He estado un tiempo ausente debido a que la Vida Real ha tomado protagonismo y me ha mantenido ocupada y alejada del mundillo de internet. Pero hoy, como es un día especial, no quería dejarlo pasar sin compartir algo con vosotros: es mi cumpleaños.

I have been absent because Real Life has become very important lately and have kept me busy and away from the Internet world. But today is a special day and I didn't want to let it pass without sharing something with you: it's my birthday.

Knitting

Desde niña aprendí a tejer con dos agujas: me enseñó mi madre, así como a hacer ganchillo. Pero nunca hice nada porque sentía que era incómodo. De niña, una simple bufanda era un proyecto largo y tedioso, y tejer por tejer sin un objetivo era una pérdida de tiempo que podía emplear en jugar o leer - algo que me gusta de verdad. Más tarde, siendo adolescente, retomé las agujas y el ganchillo con placer. Hice un par de tapetes y aprendí a leer los gráficos, era como saber leer partituras. Pero seguía sin gustarme hacer jersey: que si tejía muy prieto, que si retorcía los puntos, que si se me quedaban agujeros por todas partes... Y lo peor, tenía rampas. Es por eso que hasta el día de hoy he intentado tejer innumerables veces pero siempre tenía que dejarlo estar después de tener el brazo izquierdo casi paralizado por el dolor.

I've known how to knit since I was a child: my mother taught me, as well as crochet. But never made anything because I felt it was uncomfortable. As a child, a simple scarf was seen as a big boring project and just knitting for practice without a goal was wasting the time I could spend playing or reading - something I really love. Later as a teenager I took up the needles and hook again with pleasure. I crocheted a couple of doilies and learnt to read charts; it felt like reading music sheets. But I still couldn't get any fun knitting: I held the yarn too tight, I twisted stitches, there were holes everywhere... And the worst of it, I got cramps. That's why until today, I've attempted to knit countless times but had to stop after having my left arm almost paralyzed by pain.

A día de hoy me da vergüenza el haber abandonado tantísimas veces y nunca haber intentado entrenar y domar mi muñeca. Tenía mucha envidia de los maravillosos proyectos que hay en Ravelry: jerseys, guantes, calcetines, faldas, chaquetas... ¡Tan bonitos y personalizados! Yo también quiero hacerme mi propia ropa, de todos modos, ni siquiera sigo la moda. Y no puedo hacer todo lo que me gusta a ganchillo. Es por eso que he recogido las agujas de nuevo, y esta vez voy en serio. Tengo un objetivo: hacerme una rebeca, una realmente bonita, para ponérmela este otoño. ¡Deseadme suerte!

Today I feel it's a shame I've given up so many times and never tried to train and tame my wrist. I've been envious of all those fabulous projects on Ravelry: sweaters, gloves, socks, skirts, jackets... They look so nice and customized! I also want to make my own clothes, I don't follow fashion trends anyways. And I can't make all the clothes I like just crocheting. That is why I've picked up my needles once again, and this time it's for real. I have a goal: knitting a cardigan, a really nice cardigan, for me to wear this autumn. Wish me luck!

Me he pasado al Lado Oscuro de la Fuerza las Artes. Estoy tejiendo mi primer calcetín.
Por favor, no miréis el talón de cerca: los puntos están -de alguna manera- retorcidos y no pienso deshacerlos y volverlos a tejer. :-)

I have joined the Dark Side of the Force Crafts. I am knitting my first sock.
Please, do not look closely at the heel. There are -somehow- twisted stitches and I do not plan on frogging and knitting them again. :-)

Going public

¡¡Por fin está aquí septiembre!! Adiós, adiós, odioso verano. Y para celebrarlo, una foto: haciendo ganchillo mientras espero el metro. Había poquita gente alrededor pero más tarde dentro del vagón recibí unas cuantas miradas. A lo mejor hasta estoy en un par de blogs por ahí como la rara que hacía cosas con hilos, porque la gente que estaba sentada enfrente tenía cámaras. ;-)

September is finally here!! Bye bye, hateful summer. And here is this picture to celebrate it: crocheting while waiting for the metro. There were few people around me but later in the train I got some stares. Maybe I am being pictured in a couple of blogs out there as the weird woman doing stuff with yarn because the people sitting in front of me were holding cameras. Lol. ;-)

Tengo la sensación de que me ha tocado el gordo. ¡Muchísimas gracias, Dev! No sabías nada de esto, pero precisamente necesitaba un broche como el tuyo para un jersey que me ha tejido mi madre.

Guess who? She was Devina from The Fairy Glade. Two skeins of cotton yarn in natural colours, the cutest Christmas Angel ever, a postcard and a light brown flower brooch. I feel like I've hit the jackpot! Thank you so much, Dev! You had no idea about this but your brooch was exactly what I needed for a jersey my mother has knitted for me.

Thinking of a name for her

You still don't know who you are but even so I hope you like these little gifts I crocheted for you. They come from a non-smoking pet-free environment and are in mint condition. Please bear in mind they're 75% acrylic and 25% wool and it's been a little hard for me working with these materials in the Hot Spanish Summer, so they're not big nor perfect, but be assured that they have been made with love and care.

I'll be sending them along with some skeins to increase your stash at any moment and hope you'll receive them within a week or two, God willing.

Dried figs

Siempre me estoy quejando: me gustaría que lloviera más, me encantaría vivir en un sitio más verde, ojalá pudiera vivir en Inglaterra. Pero luego vienen momentos como éste, en los que estoy más que agradecida por vivir en la zona más árida de toda España. Naranjas, almendras, dátiles, granadas e higos... Soy tan afortunada por poder acceder tan fácilmente a estos pequeños manjares.

I'm always complaining: I'd like it to rain more often, I'd love to live a in a green place, I wish I lived in England. But when it comes to times like this, I'm grateful I live in the most arid area of Spain. Oranges, almonds, dates, pommegranates and figs, I'm so lucky to have an easy access to these delicacies.

I've already eaten two or three

En realidad no me gustan los higos ni las brevas, para mi gusto ese crujir es un tanto desagradable, pero me encantan los higos secos, son mi fruta/dulce de Navidad preferido. Y si los abres y les metes una almendra saben todavía mejor, mi abuela me lo enseñó y me dijo que se llamaban "higos con embustes".

I don't like fresh figs or early figs, I find their crunchy taste somewhat gross, but I love dried figs, they're my favourite Christmas fruit/candy. If you open them and fill them with an almond, they taste even better, my grandma taught me this and called them "figs with tricks".

Un pariente vino de visita hace poco y me regaló una cesta llena de higos secos y almendras. Los ha preparado él mismo, secándolos e hirviéndolos para asegurarse de que no tienen ningún visitante (es decir, ningún bicho). ¿Delicias navideñas en pleno verano? ¡Guau! Ah, por cierto, están riquísimos, son los higos más dulces que he comido en mi vida.

A relative of mine come to visit and gave me a basket full of dried figs and almonds. He has dried and boiled them himself to make sure they don't have any visitor (a.k.a. bug) in them. Christmas treats in the middle of the summer? Yay! Oh, and let me tell you, they're absolutely mouth-watering, the sweetest figs I've ever eaten.

Sneak peek

El verano sigue su curso, y mientras la gente se relaja y disfruta de las vacaciones, la vida me golpea donde más me duele. Mi terapia: el ganchillo. Mi objetivo: terminar y enviar el regalo a mi sorprendida a tiempo mientras hago acopio de fuerzas. Aquí os dejo un aperitivo.

Green Pea Fat Bag - finished

El FBB ya está completamente terminado, con su adorno incluido. Por el momento es provisional, no está cosido sino puesto con un imperdible, lo que me permite moverlo a otro sitio si lo prefiero o cambiarlo por otra cosa más adelante. Al final he dejado la rosa color butano, que sigo viendo fea, pero de momento no tengo lana en otros colores.

My FBB is now finished, rose decoration included. That is just provisional because I don't really like it bright orange, but at the moment I don't have any other colour to make another rose. I used a safety pin to attach it to the bag, so I can move it or replace it later.

Lana: Katia Mississippi, 60% algodón / 40% acrílica, color verde.
Ganchillo: 3,50 mm.
Tamaño: 45 cm ancho x 30 cm fondo.
Patrón: Samanta.
Modificaciones: empezando con 32 cadenetas, aumenté durante 24 pasadas, después 12 sin aumentar y otras 24 para menguar. El fruncido está hecho saltando 2 puntos en vez de 1, con 6 pasadas de punto bajo. Las asas tienen 80 cadenetas y otras 6 pasadas de punto bajo.
Consejo: Annie-Beans tiene un tutorial paso a paso muy completo, que incluye el montaje del forro. En inglés.

Yarn: Green 60% cotton / 40% acrylic Katia Mississippi.
Hook: 3.50 mm (US E).
Size: 45 cm width x 30 cm depth.
Pattern: Samanta.
Adjustements: started with 32 ch, made 24 rows increasing, 12 without increasing and another 24 decreasing. To make the gather I skipped 2 sts instead of 1, and made 6 rows of sc. To make the handles I made 80 ch and another 6 rows of sc.
Tip: Annie-Beans has a fabulous step-by-step tutorial which also includes the lining of the bag.
