Tengo la sensación de que me ha tocado el gordo. ¡Muchísimas gracias, Dev! No sabías nada de esto, pero precisamente necesitaba un broche como el tuyo para un jersey que me ha tejido mi madre.

Guess who? She was Devina from The Fairy Glade. Two skeins of cotton yarn in natural colours, the cutest Christmas Angel ever, a postcard and a light brown flower brooch. I feel like I've hit the jackpot! Thank you so much, Dev! You had no idea about this but your brooch was exactly what I needed for a jersey my mother has knitted for me.

Thinking of a name for her

Me temo que esto me convierte en la absoluta ganadora de este intercambio y sé que en estos momentos me tenéis mucha envidia, porque no hay nada que supere esta monada hecha a mano. ¡Es broma! ;-) Además, podéis conseguir vuestro propio angelito (son únicos) o broche de flor en su tienda a un precio realmente asequible.

Dear swap partner,

You still don't know who you are but even so I hope you like these little gifts I crocheted for you. They come from a non-smoking pet-free environment and are in mint condition. Please bear in mind they're 75% acrylic and 25% wool and it's been a little hard for me working with these materials in the Hot Spanish Summer, so they're not big nor perfect, but be assured that they have been made with love and care.

I'll be sending them along with some skeins to increase your stash at any moment and hope you'll receive them within a week or two, God willing.

Dried figs

Siempre me estoy quejando: me gustaría que lloviera más, me encantaría vivir en un sitio más verde, ojalá pudiera vivir en Inglaterra. Pero luego vienen momentos como éste, en los que estoy más que agradecida por vivir en la zona más árida de toda España. Naranjas, almendras, dátiles, granadas e higos... Soy tan afortunada por poder acceder tan fácilmente a estos pequeños manjares.

I'm always complaining: I'd like it to rain more often, I'd love to live a in a green place, I wish I lived in England. But when it comes to times like this, I'm grateful I live in the most arid area of Spain. Oranges, almonds, dates, pommegranates and figs, I'm so lucky to have an easy access to these delicacies.

I've already eaten two or three

En realidad no me gustan los higos ni las brevas, para mi gusto ese crujir es un tanto desagradable, pero me encantan los higos secos, son mi fruta/dulce de Navidad preferido. Y si los abres y les metes una almendra saben todavía mejor, mi abuela me lo enseñó y me dijo que se llamaban "higos con embustes".

I don't like fresh figs or early figs, I find their crunchy taste somewhat gross, but I love dried figs, they're my favourite Christmas fruit/candy. If you open them and fill them with an almond, they taste even better, my grandma taught me this and called them "figs with tricks".

Un pariente vino de visita hace poco y me regaló una cesta llena de higos secos y almendras. Los ha preparado él mismo, secándolos e hirviéndolos para asegurarse de que no tienen ningún visitante (es decir, ningún bicho). ¿Delicias navideñas en pleno verano? ¡Guau! Ah, por cierto, están riquísimos, son los higos más dulces que he comido en mi vida.

A relative of mine come to visit and gave me a basket full of dried figs and almonds. He has dried and boiled them himself to make sure they don't have any visitor (a.k.a. bug) in them. Christmas treats in the middle of the summer? Yay! Oh, and let me tell you, they're absolutely mouth-watering, the sweetest figs I've ever eaten.

Green Pea Fat Bag - finished

El FBB ya está completamente terminado, con su adorno incluido. Por el momento es provisional, no está cosido sino puesto con un imperdible, lo que me permite moverlo a otro sitio si lo prefiero o cambiarlo por otra cosa más adelante. Al final he dejado la rosa color butano, que sigo viendo fea, pero de momento no tengo lana en otros colores.

My FBB is now finished, rose decoration included. That is just provisional because I don't really like it bright orange, but at the moment I don't have any other colour to make another rose. I used a safety pin to attach it to the bag, so I can move it or replace it later.

Lana: Katia Mississippi, 60% algodón / 40% acrílica, color verde.
Ganchillo: 3,50 mm.
Tamaño: 45 cm ancho x 30 cm fondo.
Patrón: Samanta.
Modificaciones: empezando con 32 cadenetas, aumenté durante 24 pasadas, después 12 sin aumentar y otras 24 para menguar. El fruncido está hecho saltando 2 puntos en vez de 1, con 6 pasadas de punto bajo. Las asas tienen 80 cadenetas y otras 6 pasadas de punto bajo.
Consejo: Annie-Beans tiene un tutorial paso a paso muy completo, que incluye el montaje del forro. En inglés.

Yarn: Green 60% cotton / 40% acrylic Katia Mississippi.
Hook: 3.50 mm (US E).
Size: 45 cm width x 30 cm depth.
Pattern: Samanta.
Adjustements: started with 32 ch, made 24 rows increasing, 12 without increasing and another 24 decreasing. To make the gather I skipped 2 sts instead of 1, and made 6 rows of sc. To make the handles I made 80 ch and another 6 rows of sc.
Tip: Annie-Beans has a fabulous step-by-step tutorial which also includes the lining of the bag.

No me puedo creer que haya terminado otro proyecto tan pronto. Ahora toca hacer el adorno navideño para mi compañera del intercambio. Y en una semana estaré de vacaciones... ¡Feliz verano!

Asking your opinion

El Fat Bottom Bag -el bolso culogordo... mejor no traducirlo- ya está terminado, pero así tal cual es un poco soso, necesita algo que lo alegre. Le he hecho a ganchillo una rosa color naranja con hojas blancas, pensando que el contraste estaría chulo, pero lo cierto es que es un horror. ¿Alguna otra idea?

The Fat Bottom Bag is finished but it looks rather plain and needs something to brighten it up. I crocheted a rose with orange yarn with white leaves thinking the contrast will be cool but the result is... ugh! Any better ideas?

La semana pasada adquirí otro pequeño cactus para la colección. Mi tía es la dueña de la floristería así que me hizo un descuento :-D En ese momento no tenía ninguna maceta en casa, de modo que usé el envase de plástico de un arroz para microondas que usé para la cena, pensando en comprar una cerámica más tarde. Al final lo que hice fue hacer un "abrigo" de ganchillo al estilo de los de Lucy, pero con base.

Lana: Katia Promo-fin 100% acrílico.
Ganchillo: 3 mm.
Patrón:

• Empezando por el centro, 4 cadenetas.
• 1a vuelta: 11 puntos altos en la 1a cad. Unir con p. enano en la 3a cad.
• 2a vta: 3 cad, p.a. en el mismo punto, 2 p.a. en todos los puntos de la vuelta anterior. Unir con p.e. (24 ptos.)
• 3a vta: 3 cad, p.a. en el mismo punto, * p.a. en el siguiente pto., 2 p.a. en el siguiente pto. (1 aumento). Repetir desde *. Unir con p.e. (36 ptos.)
• 4a vta: 3 cad, p.a. en el mismo punto, * p.a. en los siguientes 2 ptos., 2 p.a. en el siguiente pto. (1 aumento). Repetir desde *. Unir con p.e. (48 ptos.)

Last week I added a new tiny cactus to my collection. My aunt runs that flower shop and gave me a discount :-D At the time I didn't have any flowerpot at home and used a plastic container from some microwave rice I had for supper, thinking of purchasing a pottery flowerpot some day, but I ended crocheting a colourful cover, inspired by Lucy's jar jackets. Mine has bottom though.

Yarn: 100% acrylic Katia Promo-fin.
Hook: 3 mm / US D.
Pattern:

• Starting at center, ch 4.
• 1st rnd: 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join.
• 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around. Join to top of ch-3. (24 sts)
• 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc (1 dc increased). Repeat from * around. Join. (36 sts)
• 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc (1 dc increased). Repeat from * around. Join. (48 sts)
• 5th-10th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. (48 sts)
• 11th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in each dc around. Join and fasten off.

Tips: Make the round bottom as big as you need by increasing 12 dc evenly on each round. For a striped pattern, use different colours.

Los ovillos, de algodón, una mezcla de lana y seda (¡cuánto lujo!) y fantasía. Por fin tengo uno de los famosos ovillos de Sugar'n Cream. Y es algodón 100%; empezaba a pensar que no existía.

The skeins, cotton, wool'n silk blend (luxurious!) and fur. Finally I have one of those famous Sugar'n Cream on my hands, and it's 100% cotton. I was starting to think that it was a fantasy.

Los caramelos son ácidos, de fresa unos y de fresa y uva los otros, de Willy Wonka. ¡No sabía que existía de verdad! ¡Están buenísimos! Y son adictivos...

Sour candies, strawberry flavoured and strawberry&grape flavoured, from Willy Wonka. It does exist actually! They're so tasty! And addictive!!

Los folletos, de la casa Meyer May de Frank Lloyd Wright, uno de mis arquitectos preferidos. Creó unas casas de ensueño y afortunadamente, algunas están restauradas y convertidas en museo como ésta.

Brochures from Frank Lloyd Wright's Meyer May House, one of my favourite architects. He designed really fantastic houses and fortunately some of them are restored museums like this one.

Y no sólo es todo maravilloso -que lo es-, sino que me quedé asombrada porque además los ovillos traen un patrón en el reverso de la etiqueta. ¿Son todas las lanas americanas así? Pues las de aquí ya podrían ir tomando nota...

And not only everything is wonderful -it is!- but I'm amazed at those skeins. They have printed a pattern on the back of the label. Are all American yarns like these? Our national ones should take note of that...

El bolso está casi terminado, sólo me faltan las asas.

Fat bottom indeed

Mi idea era usar una tela de forro al uso, del mismo verde de la lana, pero no pude encontrar exactamente el mismo color, de modo que me decanté por esta mezcla de algodón (lo mío son las mezclas) y poliéster a rayas.

I wanted to line it with a green fabric similar to the yarn but I couldn't find the same colour so I decided on this striped cotton & polyester one (mixes love me).

Gimme more yarn! Roar!!

Los dobladillos están hechos a máquina, pero el forro lo cosí a mano al bolso para que las puntadas quedaran escondidas y no sean visibles desde fuera. También le hice dos bolsillos interiores, uno de ellos para el teléfono móvil. Y sí, la máquina la usé yo solita :-D

The hems were sewn on the machine, but later I handstitched the lining to the bag because I didn't want the stitches to be visible from the outside. I also made two little inside pockets, one of them for the mobile phone. And yes, I was the one using the sewing machine :-D

Aún no está terminado pero creo que me he enamorado. Y no soy la única: ya tengo un encargo... que no voy a cobrar. Cosas de familia :-)

It's not finished yet but I think I'm in love with it! But I'm not the only one, I've got my first customer... and I'm not going to be paid because she's family. Oh, well :-)

Catching up

No apetece nada tejer. Nada, nada, nada. Hace mucho calor, y muy pegajoso. Pero como tampoco me apetece hacer ninguna otra cosa, siempre acabo cogiendo el ganchillo y los hilos para apalancarme delante de alguna serie a pasar la tarde. Y es que si no me hago a la idea, no termino la cubierta.

I don't feel like crocheting at all. Weather is too hot and muggy. But to be true I don't feel like doing anything else and in the end I look for the hook and the yarn to sit before the screen to watch any series. Because if I don't put any effort on it, I'm not finishing that bedspread anytime soon.

La semana pasada fui a la tienda de las lanas. De las dos tiendas -pequeñas- que hay, una cierra en julio por las tardes. La otra, a la que suelo ir porque está más cerca de casa, afortunadamente no. Da un poco de claustrofobia y sensación de auténtico desorden. Los ovillos están amontonados sobre el mostrador, en cestas, en las estanterías rebosantes y en montones, dentro bolsas de plástico del embalaje, por el suelo. Apenas hay sitio para pasar.

La dueña de la tienda estaba tejiendo a velocidad crucero. La amiga estaba sentada fuera del mostrador mirándome con cara de "otra que se ha equivocado de tienda". Esto fue más o menos lo que ocurrió:

Ella, mirándome por encima de las gafas sin parar de tejer: Buenas tardes, dime.
Yo: Buenas tardes, pues no sé lo que quiero. ¿Qué tiene de algodón?
Ella: ¿Tiene que ser 100% algodón?
Yo: Pues si es posible... sí.
Ella: Mira, tengo esta que es mezcla de algodón y acrílico -señala un montoncito diminuto sobre el mostrador.
Yo: Es que es para hacer un bolso.
Ella: Ah, entonces estupendo. Esta mezcla es perfecta para eso.
Yo: Vale... ¿tienes verde?
Ella: Sí, claro, ahora te lo busco -se agacha para buscar en una de las mil bolsas que hay por el suelo tras el mostrador.
Amiga: Mira, en la cesta del mostrador tienes una.
Yo: Ah, sí, es cierto; gracias —y tiro a sacarla.

¡Error! Se me va cayendo el montón, uno a uno, mientras intento atraparlos conforme caen. Una escena de malabarismo absurdo que podría ser digna de una película de los hermanos Marx.

Tras el bochorno, compré la dichosa mezcla. El algodón 100% tendrá que esperar...

Last week I went to the local yarn shop. We have two -small- shops in the city, one of them 'July afternoons: closed'. Fortunately, it was not the one I usually go to -the one that's closer. It's somewhat claustrophobic and messy. Skeins are piled up everywhere: on the counter, in baskets, in shelves, on the floor still in their wrapping bags. You barely can come in.

The owner was knitting at an awesome speed. The owner's friend was sitting in the customer area giving me a "another girl who's in the wrong shop again" stare. This is what happened:

Her, peeking at me over her spectacles: Good afternoon. Tell me.
Me: Good afternoon. Well, I don't know what I want. What do you have in cotton?
Her: Do you mean 100% cotton?
Me: If possible... yes.
Her: Look, I have this cotton and acrylic -points at a tiny pile on the counter.
Me: But I need it for a bag.
Her: Oh, nice. This mix is perfect for bags.
Me: OK... Do you have it in green?
Her: Yes, of course. Let me look for it -squats and disappears behind the couch, searching in one of the thousand bags on the floor.
Friend: Look, there's a green one in that basket.
Me: Oh, you're right, thank you! —and I try to get it. My bad!

The skeins in the pile start to fall, while I try desperately to catch them in the air. An absurd juggling scene that Marx brothers would have included in any of their films.

After embarrasing myself, I bought that mixed yarn. 100% cotton will have to wait...

Aproveché para comprar un ovillo que me llamó la atención en el escaparate cuando fui este invierno pasado. Tenía una bufanda expuesta preciosa y me encantó, pero en aquel momentó se me olvidó preguntar por ella. Poco después se agotó esa lana, pero esta vez no pude resistir la tentación y me compré un ovillo :-)

Also I took the oportunity to buy some yarn that caught my attention when I saw this scarf last winter. It was displayed in the shop window and I fell in love but forgot to ask about it. Shortly after they were sold out but this time I couldn't resist purchasing a skein to give it a try! :-)

Es muy suave y agradable al tacto, y se termina en una sola tarde (aunque a mi me costó dos). Eso sí, hace demasiado calor incluso para posar con la bufanda puesta aunque sólo sea un minuto ;-)

The scarf is very soft and nice to the touch and very easy to make, you'll only need one afternoon although I needed two. But sorry to say it's too hot to pose with it even if it's only for a minute! ;-)

Lana: 1 ovillo de Katia Big Snow en tonos verdes. 100% microfibra.
Agujas: 6 mm.
Patrón: Montar 11 puntos. Tejer del derecho hasta que se termine el ovillo.
Consejos: Montar los puntos del modo sencillo. Lo intenté con dos hebras bastantes veces hasta darme por vencida. Trabajar las primeras pasadas con cuidado y paciencia, los madroños tienen muy mala idea y les gusta enredarse ;-)

Yarn: 1 skein of Katia Big Snow in green shades. 100% microfiber.
Needles: 6 mm / US10.
Pattern: Cast on 11 stitches. Work in garter stitch until you run out of yarn.
Tips: Better use the single cast-on method with this yarn, I tried the long tail cast-on many times before giving up. Knit carefully the first two or three rows, those knots are treacherous and may get entangled ;-)
