«Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also» (Prov 31, 28). Another centred panel featuring the family of our main character, the Virtuous Woman from this psalm. It nicely complements the couple one on the upper half. Once again it is dense with colours and background filling. The poor girl looks a bit like Popeye because French knots are not my forte. This portrait took me twelve days. Just one more panel and we will get to 'the grand finale'! :-)

By the way, that is how the cross-stitching looks before back-stitching. It requires a lot of imagination to sense what the final result will be!

¡Feliz verano! :-)

.:: English ::.

This spring hasn't been the most productive if you look at quantity, but I have not been idle either. I am a slow knitter who gets easily distracted and has no intention of finishing projects quickly; quite the opposite, I want them to last for a long time so I can enjoy the making as much as possible. Slowly but surely.

I am still knitting Ghost Horses sweater.
In the end I gave in and purchased another beige skein despite my decision of not buying more yarn. It is better to have a pullover with balanced colours that will be worn, than to end up with a yarn version of Dr. Frankestein's monster that will probably end up in the rubbish bin.

Put it on hold during March and April, while pondering over purchasing new yarn or not, and knit a lace Estonian shawlette from my queue with a spare skein from my stash: the famous Echo Flower. This is undoubtedly the most difficult pattern I have ever knit. There are no pictures yet as it is not blocked.

Finished Ramona cardigan, waved in ends and purchased matching buttons. Next step will be to sew them and give it a cleaning bath. I am quite satisfied because I managed to use up all the yarn and it looks very nice, although it is a bit heavy.

Crocheted a small doily trying to emulate Hana Doily from 2011. A confession: I have been neglecting crochet for so long that I wasn't able to match hook size and yarn properly, so the result leaves much to be desired.

Cross-stitch is still on hold, because I must make the most of the yarn season before the summer heat hits in. Well... almost, as I made an exception and tried out stitching a small motif from my favourite cross-stitch book, The Cross Stitch Motif Bible.

That is all for now. I am still reading a lot, learning Latin and watching my favourite old soap operas. Projects that need finishing or sharing on the blog keep piling up, as always. Have a happy summer! :-)
Alhanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02544336735869368358noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1805499840693342036.post-45008054240460511912023-05-19T12:00:00.032+02:002023-11-29T11:14:06.911+01:00A Virtuous Woman (XI)

It wasn't planned but I found a single bulky skein while I was organising my stash and went for it. This skein came home by mistake (the yarn shop lady kindly suggested my mother to try it for a blanket she wanted to knit, knowing that it couldn't be returned after trying!) and due to our warm temperatures it was unlikely that I would ever knit something with it. I knew it was perfect for another hat lest it ended up in the rubbish with the rest of "what-do-i-want-this-for" poor yarn skeins.

Finding a suitable pattern was a bit difficult since I had so little yardage, but in the end The Vermonter by Abi Gregorio was the winner. It is a very quick and simple knit. My biggest fear was running out of yarn, although there was a little ball left after binding off that was included along the hat for my friend to make a pom-pom or crochet flower if she liked so.

Sadly the hat turned out too small and I didn't know it until she told me. It was a miscalculation that keeps bothering perfectionist me, since I could have used that remaining ball to make another repetition. This is what happens from sticking to the pattern and knitting against the clock!

«She rises before dawn and gives food to her household» (Prov 31, 15). The kitchen verse with the moon as her witness. Both the kettle and the hanging cloth are my favourite (I have a cloth just like that), while the pots on the floor proved quite tiresome to stitch, for they have too many colours and ¼ stitches.

This panel mirrors the crafter panel on the opposite side of the sampler since they are placed at the same level, and it also falls on the fabric fold. Even so this one was slightly easier to stitch, perhaps because the groups of stitches of the same colour were larger or because I was already used to work with a chart cut in half. Nevertheless it took me nine days to complete.

He aquí la prueba.

♥

.:: English ::.

As the saying goes, better late than never. Here is evidence: it took me eleven years to notice I never published this beautiful tunic made in spring 2012. Sadly I barely got the chance to wear it thanks to the extreme temperatures of our long, sultry summers.

If I am not mistaken, Gala Top & Tunic was Hiroko Fukatsu's first design —a great Japanese knitter whom I admire and also the designer behind another garments I have also knit, Hitofude and Tsubaki. It still remains a free pattern today, a rare deed. However there is only one size —which happens to be mine— and any modification to adapt it will depend on the knitter's skill level.

Looking at the pictures it is not difficult to understand why did I fall in love with it: front and back are different and fully interchangeable, depending on your choice; you can wear boat neckline today and v-neck tomorrow; cables fall from shoulders following the body design and getting bigger as they reach the bottom, either centred or at both sides.

Despite being a sleeveless cotton garment the thick yarn made it so heavy that it felt like carrying a warm blanket instead, and made it impossible to wear (pun intended). It was originally designed as a woolly waistcoat for winter to wear over a thin pullover or shirt. Thinking I could make a summer garment by using cotton was a big mistake, as we think cotton is a light fibre when it is quite the opposite.

Gala Tunic

Yarn: four skeins of 100% cotton Lanas Stop Luxor, colour 700 (white). 400 g that weighed like 4 kg.
Pattern: Gala Top & Tunic by Hiroko Fukatsu (free).

Still cannot believe I forgot to post this tunic after feeling so happy and accomplished once it was finished. My first project with cables after trying lace knitting just a year before. That mistake is amended now. Thankfully I took the corresponding photos back then and managed to locate them because Gala does not exist anymore and will soon become Ramona. As stated above: better eleven years later than never. ;-)

My first project finished in 2023 is this second hat I made for Entre-Punts with a typical winter design. The pattern is called Planetarium and you can find it for free on Knitty, an online magazine.

Did you know Knitty is still ongoing? What a joy it brought me as a novice knitter when all we had available were the magazines they let you take a peek at the local yarn shops, in which you chose a (seamed) garment and the lady owner jotted down a few notes on paper for you. It made me very happy to find out they are still standing for free.

The hat is made with leftovers from two similar but different skeins of Katia Fama Plus used for two baby jackets (Baby Surprise I & Baby Surprise III), and some white scraps that were so poor yarn that they didn't even had a label anymore—well, they were actually two different white balls, as I ran out of yarn when I was knitting the crown and had to attach another unknown one. Thankfully it is imperceptible! It is also unnoticeable to the naked eye that the variegated yarn are actually two, as the gradient turned out smoothly: the skein change took place just in the middle of a star in a row full of white stitches, where the olive green ends and the blue starts, and it is well concealed. Seems done on purpose! :-)

I couldn't seem to get the correct gauge no matter how tiny yarn/needles combo I used, so followed instead Sea Glass Hat adult S instructions adding 2 sts to tally with Planetarium chart repetition, with slightly bigger needles for a comfy and accurate knit: 128 stitches total for 16 chart repetitions.

Without a doubt this is my favourite among the triplet of hats I made this winter. I liked it so much that I was tempted to keep it. I shall knit this pattern again for sure and this time I may keep it—even if I never have the chance to wear it. ;-)

During this winter I am trying to make up for the lost time away from needles in 2022. It looks like this hiatus made me hungry for more. Suddenly all I seem to think about is knitting and using up all the old skeins stored for years. It must be a side effect of Marikondoing and rearranging wardrobes.

Ghost Horses, which I tentatively started last autumn, is currently on hold. I have to make up my mind whether to keep knitting with the leftover yarn I have at home and face whatever colour scheme comes up (probably straight out of a horror house), or rather buy more yarn in the earthy tones used until now and wreck my plans about getting rid of those skeins and never buy them again. Decisions, decisions...

During Christmas I binge-knitted three hats for Entre-Punts, who graciously adopted as much poor yarn as I wanted to dump on her. Sea Glass Hat is already on the blog and the other two will be published in the next weeks. Coming soon!

Once the hats were finished my hands became empty since I couldn't work on my Ghost Horses. After a lot of thought and a wardrobe rearrangement I noticed that my old and reliable Piperita was ready for the scrapyard. It was a heartbroken decision but I ripped my lovely Gala tunic (did I honestly never post the finished garment on the blog?!) which I barely wore twice since I finished it in 2012. Wearing 400 g of aran yarn at 30º C (85 F) and 80% humidity is suffocating even for a sleeveless cotton garment. Adding the skein I had left unused may be enough for a pretty spring cardigan. The chosen pattern is called Ramona and it will be finished soon—maths willing.

I almost forgot this! Between the last hat and the cardigan I made a belly warmer for myself called Makiko.
It sounds weird but apparently it is a traditional Japanese garment (haramaki) used in winter to keep your back and belly warm. Sort of a waistcoat without shoulders. It was another result of my destashing poor yarn fever with those skeins that don't have enough length for a sweater or jacket. The yarn left is enough for another hat, but don't know yet whether I will keep it and own a matching pair, or give it away.

Cross-stitch is currently on hold too. I am a slow and focused crafter, and dislike being fickle or having several different projects at the same time. I shall take a little break from yarns once one of these projects is finished and pick my Proverb 31 sampler up again. It is almost finished!

This has been my winter report. It seems very little for all the spare time I could spend on crafting, but as I said above I am a slow knitter. See you all in spring for a new account! :-)
Alhanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02544336735869368358noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1805499840693342036.post-2435405125590887192023-02-13T10:00:00.217+01:002023-02-13T10:00:00.165+01:00Yarn storage

Archivador lanero

Feliz semana.

.:: English ::.

At the beginning of this year I was possessed by Marie Kondo's decluttering spirit. After doing my yearly yarn review I noticed a disheartening pattern: my goal of reducing yardage is set, stored yarn doesn't match my queued projects, new designs catch my eye and new skeins arrive to my letterbox. I end up using the newly arrived yarns and forgetting the old ones, and the cycle starts again the next year.

I am trying to break this vicious circle tidying up all the yarn that has been piling up for the last fifteen years—scary, I know. Not only it was not gathered together in the same place, but also it was difficult to find whatever I was looking for: having an inventory on Ravelry is useless if balls and skeins are scattered in several boxes and bags, which in turn are hidden out of sight. It was utter chaos and made me uncomfortable to live in such an unsightly room.

Now my crafting corner looks much tidier. I purchased this small drawer cabinet with casters which can store almost all my yarn. The translucent drawers allow me to take a peek without opening them and know whether they are full or find something quickly.

Its measurements are 62,5 cm high, 26 cm wide and 34 cm deep; each drawer is 18 cm high. First drawer stores snob yarn: merino, silk, handdyed and other delicatessen which cost an arm and a leg. Second has lesser yarn blends for socks, and some notions bags and purses. Third has cotton balls and fabric.

So what about poor yarn? Those are still hidden in a box under my bed out of sight. There is no room for them in the cabinet nor there will be for I plan to get rid of them before that. At the moment three hats have found their way into a new home, the first of them was posted last week, and I do hope more will do in the future thanks to further kindhearted adoptions. ;-)

Have a nice week.

Alhanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02544336735869368358noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1805499840693342036.post-40108597675134812812023-02-06T12:00:00.202+01:002023-02-06T14:47:40.776+01:00 Sea Glass Hat

My last finished project in 2022 is this three-coloured hat knit with poor yarn leftovers that is now at Entre-Punts with her belated birthday present and two other hats that will be published in the following weeks.

The design is free stash-buster pattern called Sea Glass Hat from Wool & Pine, you can find it here. It wasn't my first option, but since she requested it I had no problem switching patterns. It is a plain basic beanie worked 1x1 that comes alive when using variegated yarn or scraps of different colours.

In this case I used up scraps of Katia Merino Classic that were left over from two failed projects: Caitlin Pullover (which never made it on the blog) and Afmæli. I must confess this yarn is not for the poor altogether since it contains merino and the hat was very warm, but we can safely place it in this category from its high acrylic content.

Now that she has received it I can finally post the cross-stitch ornament I mentioned in my last post about last year review: an October inspired small pillow (best month of the year) for my dear Entre Punts' birthday—three months late! My apologies.

The chart is included in Woodland Sampler, a well-known cross-stitch calendar with twelve cute-forest themed panels by The Frosted Pumpkin. I chose the month I needed among them and made some small changes like translating October for Octubre (in Spanish and Catalan, our languages) and replacing the suggested floss by the ones I already had at home. I had a good laugh after opening her present because she also chose an acorn for me!

Despite the wide variety of fabrics at my local haberdashery I was unable to find any with autumn print. This dull poplin with a flower print and similar colours had to do.

I followed this step by step tutorial by Vonna Pfeiffer at The Twister Stitcher for instructions on how to sew a pillow ornament. She also teaches many other ways to finish cross-stitch works on her blog.

Lanas adquiridas

1.- Malabrigo Lace

860 m violeta

860 m rosa

usados: 500 m

quedan: 360 m

2.- Cascade Heritage (regalo) 400 m

usados: 225 m

quedan: 175 m

3.- Malabrigo Mechita (regalo) 384 m

usados: 338 m

quedan: 46 m

Labores terminadas

1.- Magnolia

A ahorradora no me gana nadie.

♥

I injured my shoulder at the end of 2021. It has not been healed yet although it is not painful anymore. This has prevented me from knitting, writing or drawing, and the only activity I could do in 2022 was reading and studying Latin with a few moments of cross-stitch here and there since, injured or not, yours truly cannot stay away from floss and yarn for too long.

This has become obvious on the blog: posts from last year only showed projects finished in 2021 or before, and a few small finishes from my Proverbs 31 sampler. Today's post is a joint recount of 2021 and 2022 resolutions and yardage. Please forgive this humble Spaniard for talking in metres only without converting them to yards this time —it is exhausting!

These were my New Year's Resolutions for 2021:

I do not have any lofty goals for 2021. Just to enjoy my crafts, knit or crochet another 6 projects and keep on stitching tiny crosses. And bringing my stash yardage down to four figures.

Was I able to get it done on time? At the end of 2020 I had 18.324 m in stash and had finished 6 projects. Let us see what has happened since then:

1.- Magnolia

First project of 2021 that kept me busy until spring. I KALed this sweater that was on my queue with Ana María, who also knitted it her way. It used up 965 metres.

2.- Ginkgo Crescent

Since this tangled skein
came onto my hands I knew it would return to where it had come from —but knitted. It used up
338 metres (yes, I saved a tiny ball for myself because garments are warmer when made with the same yarn you used to make something for a dear friend)

3.- Cactus Flower Swallowtail

One of my favourite designs and it is free, could it be better?
It used up 500 metres (a bit more than one skein) because I wanted it to be big enough. Will I be able to make something useful with less than a skein? Doubt it, and mixing it with other colour is a bit unsettling for me.

4.- Sant Jordi Dragon

Summer amigurumi crocheted with leftovers from a bag
I made ages ago. These cotton skeins are great, they were as good as new after so many years. It used very few metres and I did not bother to enter them.

5.- Apple Green Jarvis

Last project knitted at the end of autumn just before I injured my shoulder. This yarn came in the same parcel than the Ginkgo Crescent shawl tangled skein, but I kept this one instead. It only used up 225 metres thanks to my tiny princessy feet and there is almost half a skein left, enough for another pair with contrast toe and heel. Thriftiest person ever.

→ These are all the projects I finished in 2021 before my injury. Since then I have not touched my needles until this winter, when I picked them up again very slowly. Good news is no more yarn has entered my stash, neither purchased nor gifted. Better than nothing! :-)

6. Sea Glass Hat

In 2022 I was able to finish a single project (a gift not published yet) with merino leftovers in several colours. It used around 127 metres.
Update: posted on February 6th 2023.

Extra.- Cross-stitch

They do not add up to the yarn account, but not talking about them here would be unfair. In 2021 & 2022 I have continued with the sampler named Proverb 31 "A virtuous woman"; finished a bib for a newborn and a small ornament (another gift not published yet either). Not bad!

The numbers:

In 2020 I obtained 1,575 m and used up 2,442 m in six projects, so I managed to reduce my stash -867 m. At the end of the year I had 18,324 m.

In 2021 I obtained 2,504 m but only used up 2,028 m, so I gained 476 m. At the end of the year I had 18,800 m in my stash and five finished projects.

In 2022 not a single skein entered my stash. Yay! But I knitted so little that my stash was only reduced -127 m with a single finished project. I now have 18,673 m in total.

Summary: I finished 6 knitted / crocheted projects (5 in 2021 and 1 in
2022), kept on stitching and enjoyed knitting very much until my shoulder allowed. Not only I failed to reduce my stash but also it was increased in 349 m, but keeping in mind all those inactivity months I would say this year balance is not that bad.

I will not set any goals for 2023. Hopefully I shall be able to enjoy crafting again if my health allows it, finish all my ongoing projects and make some more gifts for my friends. Of course, I shall keep trying to reduce my stash and gain some space. Will this year be the one?

Happy New Year 2023!
♥
Alhanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02544336735869368358noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1805499840693342036.post-41879440673830338992022-12-25T08:00:00.001+01:002023-12-17T21:09:57.887+01:00Merry Christmas 2022

Christmas 2022

Merry Christmas * Feliz Navidad

«She works with her hands in delight» (Prov 31, 13).
The crafter verse, this panel is dedicated to all of us who work with our hands in delight, notably when making gifts for other crafters. Everytime I look at her cannot help but think of my dear Entrepunts, a stitcher who never rests and is always working on something —although I do not know whether she has a cat curled up at her feet. ;-)

This panel was a bit difficult to stitch (and photograph!) since it falls just on the fabric fold —pressing it would have been pointless as I fold the fabric again to store it away. Also the chart is cut in half and managing two big A3 sheets for this panel and the one on the opposite side proved quite tiresome. Stitching the stitcher took me ten days.

Seguiremos informando. ♥

.:: English ::.

I am slowly going back on track again. I have been away from yarn debauchery and the mandatory project always on your needles for a while, something easy to notice here on the blog with the last entries focusing on cross-stitch. Also, although you do not see it, most of my time is spent on Latin self-study —the hobby I would choose were I only allowed to have one, and my one true love since I reached the use of reason. But now that the cold weather is back after a dreadful summer, I feel like picking up my knitting needles again. :-)

There is a box full of acrylic yarns under my bed, leftovers from old projects, for which I would like to find a way out and use that space for more urgent things. I mean a way out in a sensible way, knitting something instead of just getting rid of them. Being acrylic (aka poor's yarn) does not mean they are not useful!

The chosen design for this purpose has been Ghost Horses by Caitlin Hunter, a sweater with a fun yoke perfect for combining leftovers. Currently my only obsession aside from maintaining a proper contrast is keeping red and blue from touching at all costs —a personal phobia.

I tried fair isle knitting several times before, most of them with terrible results that ended frogged or thrown away. Hopefully this project will teach me how to hold one strand in each hand in order to control better my tension. For now everything looks fine —but I have not tried the sweater on to check the size yet!

Will keep you updated. ♥
Alhanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02544336735869368358noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1805499840693342036.post-32292606004972146002022-11-21T08:00:00.293+01:002022-11-21T16:44:41.569+01:00Flowers & Tea Matching Set (2021 & 2022 birthday presents)

Té, lunares, flores y punto de cruz

Today's post is exclusively a show off about my birthday presents, specifically the ones my dear Entrepunts made.
She managed to whip up a whole matching set during two years using the same fabrics that reminds me of the kitchen toys we had as children (there were only a couple of matching pieces of every size but made a complete kitchenware set) adding an autumn touch, of course, honouring the best season of the year when we were both born.

More detailed info on her blog and Instagram:

→ The Rosa Supply Case for the project case (pattern by Clover & Violet)
→ Mini Costurer for the mini sewing case (pattern by Aneela Hoey) and pouch (tutorial by Cluck Cluck Sew)
→ Spot of Tea Saucer for the tea coasters (pattern by Linen Bouquet)
→ Andy Acorn for the acorn amigurumi (free pattern by Crafty Emmi)

This is how the sampler looks when I am about to reach the halfway point.
Admittedly there are two side panels left to complete the upper half, but they also go over the lower half and I prefer to show progress at this point.

Lately I do not seem to be in the mood for crafts because my drawers are full with clothes and knitting does not seem as pleasurable at is should knowing that I do not need more garments. However I had to make an exception for these cuties, and needless to say, I cannot wait until this bothersome summer goes away and the nice sweater weather comes in to wear them.

It took me a while to shake this lazyness off, but at some point I brought myself to knit this pair of fabulous socks from the book Custom Socks with this amazing <strike>lettuce</strike> apple green yarn, both of them present from my dear friend Dácil. Does someone remember that little lost parcel kidnapped at Customs? Yes, this was the yarn it contained!

It has been a pleasure to be able to knit and adapt this detailed pattern to my tiny sized feet. This book was a great gift indeed and I hope to get the most out of it in the future. Let socks come to me!

Apple Green Jarvis

Yarn: less than a skein of 75% Merino, 25% Nylon Cascade Yarns Heritage Sock, colour 5659 Primavera.
