On my needles — Autumn 2018

Cosiendo

4. Algo para el mes de diciembre del reto Back to Blogger (más información en la columna lateral). A ver qué sale...

Estudiando

Or how a seemingly normal and average knitter can end up trapped by a maelstrom caused by the best Chinese drama of all times and live to tell the tale. With long term emotional damages and a broken heart I keep on knitting everyday while my mind flies away to the times of Chinese Emperor Kangxi in the 18th century and dream of a day when someone will give me a magnolia jade hairpin even if we can never make our love come true.

As for my needles, oblivious to my delusions, they have been on fire since the temperatures got cooler by the end of the summer and this is what I have been doing between starts:

Knitting

voie lactée
Voie lactée matches my tiny markers tin

1. I finished my Voie lactée shawl with plenty of time to pack and send it prettily. Finished item on your screens very soon! (I know I say this everytime I finish a garment, then take too long to post it, but this time I will soon).

yarn & beads
What are the odds of finding the exact shade?

2. As soon as I send it off I started a new shawl named Danse Macabre with the gorgeous yarn La Modistilla Valiente gave me for my birthday, and used my new yarn bowl and panda toppers! This is by far the most complicated pattern I have knitted in my life. And it has beads! There is no picture of the real progress because I am too busy focusing on the stitches (and because light in the batcave is simply awful this time of the year).

Crocheting

crochet kit
Tartitas de algodón

3. Easying my mind with the crocheted necklaces from The Little Treasures kit whenever I am feeling too tired to knit Danse Macabre or I am away from home, as this is my carry-on project. Crocheting tubes is very soothing and fulfilling. :-)

Stitching

4. Something for December's Back to Blogger challenge (more info on the sidebar). Let us see how it turns out...

Studying

5. Chapters 21 and 22 from LLPSI. Still at preterite perfect while supine join us. My favourite Latin tense!

6. I haven't picked up Greek yet, but instead I found my old Latin text books from highshool and I am slowly doing the exercises on there. Chapters 1 to 7 and already translating boring Caesar and his troops tales, so I am not sure how long will I last. On the bright side, it includes Medieval and Modern Latin texts. I had forgotten about it and cannot be happier to have found them out.

Watching

Bu Bu Jing Xin

7. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (달의 연인: 보보경심 려), or how to spoil an otherwise perfectly good story, despite its flawless photography and mind-blowing OST, with an atrocious editing and other questionable choices. Based on a Chinese drama, which in turn is based on a popular Internet novel, it tells the adventures of a modern Korean girl who dies and whose soul gets reincarnated in a Goryeo dynasty (10th century) noble girl's body and how her presence affected history in spite of her reluctance to get too involved in court.

I have only cried twice in more than ten years watching Korean dramas and this drama is one of those. And I mean sobbing uncontrollably for several minutes, not a couple of tears.

the best: acting, photography (esp. winter scenes) and OST. The final scene between brothers fighting for the burial ashes (warning: danger of tear flooding!)
the worst: editing, certain choices when adapting the original Chinese dinasty to the Korean, and bloody product placement even in period dramas. Shortening the original lenght to half was a very bad call.

To those who are curious, you can check the trailer here: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and a fan made music video with the most beautiful and touching song containing a few spoilers here: Will be back.

8. Strong woman Dong Bong Soon (힘쎈여자 도봉순). Because I was not obsessed at all (ahem) with previous drama's princes I delved on the filmography of one of them and found this fun story. A tiny and delicate looking girl has superstrenght powers and uses them to combat crime. It is an amusing and light thriller, but the omnipresent product placement is in almost every scene, spoiling the fun.

9. The love of my life Startling by each step (步步惊心 / Bu Bu Jing Xin). After a couple of weeks suffering from the wonderful and touching Scarlet Heart withdrawal, endlessly searching for fan made videos, rewatching my favourite scenes and reading everything that caught my eyes related to it, I made up my mind and took the final step to watch the original Chinese drama, getting over my earlier reluctance. O dei boni! Why did I do that? I never imagined that I would fall in a bottomless pit from where I could never get out even if I tried all my life.

EPIC. I am at a loss of words to describe how it ensnared me and moved into my heart forever. Despite knowing, thanks to the Korean version, both plot and ending, it still managed to move me in all aspects. Not only that, but I became even more infatuated with 4th prince. Yes, despite those Manchu queues —or maybe because of them.

the best: Everything! Restrained but deep acting; genuine ancient clothing, furnitures, jewellery and embellishments that were purchased from antiques shops; the broad supporting cast; the slow-paced but not draggy rate; 4th prince's cautious glances and expressions; the subtle dialogues...
the worst: CGI. Budget was used up in clothing, antiques and locations, and there wasn't anything left for computer graphics. Just grit your teeth and look the other way whenever it happens.

To those who are curious, you can check the opening theme here: One persistent thought.

I have learnt some new Chinese vocabulary like 木兰 (mùlán), which means magnolia and plays an important role in the story. I have learnt a lot about history, notably about the Qing dinasty and Manchu traditions. And, more importantly, I have cried rivers every single night despite being prepared.

Reading

Regardless of my court abduction I still have time and peace of mind for a bit of reading something outside said dynasty and its developments.

10. Walden, by Henry David Thoureau. Looks like I am starting to enjoy reading essays. Never thought I would read my own thoughts about life, much less having been written by a man who lived two hundred years ago.

11. El alquimista impaciente, by Lorenzo Silva. I don't usually like detective books but I enjoyed this one very much. Since I liked the author's writing style I will try to read the other books of this saga during winter.

Still, I am hoping some publisher will translate the novel Bu Bu Jing Xin into English and make us fans, thousands of us, happy so we can finally read the original adventures of our time trapped heroine.

I know it looks like I haven't been very busy knitting but wasting my time smitten by Eastern beaus and impossible stories; however, I have been knitting everyday (while watching dramas, ha!). I am not a fast knitter, cannot dedicate myself to it as desired because I become easily distracted and the projects I chose have some level of difficulty so they can be fun, so in the end I don't knit as much as I would like. But of course I am knitting! And if while knitting my heart dreams of magnolias, so much the better.

See you soon!

  1. ¡Bieeeen!
