Crab Apple Swallowtail Shawl

¡Que tengáis un feliz fin de semana!
Hasta pronto

Tiny me from the frame approves how the shawl turned out

These are the pictures of the shawl I knit for Nekane last spring which I didn't show you yet although she did post hers on her blog whereas I blogged about the shirt she sewed for me.

You must be wondering, why now? Firstly, because I hadn't posted the project details and now that it has been a while but not too much since the barter was done I wanted to reminisce about the wonderful time I had, troublemaking nupps included. Secondly, because as previously stated here on the blog I am a synaesthetic and September is "green" to me so this is the best time to show them. It would be something like this:

SEPTEMBER → SEPTEMBERSEPTEMBER

Besides green is my favourite colour —if someone hadn't noticed yet— which is a lame excuse but justifies my decision as well. The joy I felt when Nekane asked me to knit a green shawl when we were exchanging e-mails is something I cannot explain with words. I was suspicious at first: did she really want a green shawl or had she choosen that colour just to please me? But I judged better not to ask in case she changed her mind and asked me for a red one instead — yuck! ;-)

Shallowtail ruffles its wings

Some modifications to enlarge it were in order. Swallowtail Shawl is a small shawl per se but if you want to knit it with lace yarn for airier results the final size gets significantly reduced. The first one I knit turned out really small even for tiny me, for Nekane it would be simply ridiculous. Here you can read the steps I took for knitting a larger size:

  • Shawl is enlarged by repeating section 2 "Budding Lace" in multiple of 5. I did 24 repeats instead of 14 (+10).
  • By modifying the repeat count the stitches become unbalanced. Section 3 "Lily of the Valley" offers no problem, however 4 "Lace Border" does. Ravelry user J-knitwit posted a wonderful calculation chart where you can check how many extra stitches you will need to start this section according to the repeats you have knit: 14, 19, 24, 29...
  • For size 24 I needed 8 extra stitches in section 4 → I repeated rows 1 & 2 once more (4 sts inc), increasing 1 st after the yo at the beg and before the yo at the end of each half (4 sts inc): 8 sts inc total. These increases aren't noticeable nor deform the row in any way.

Nuppsy Lily of the Valley and Lace Border detail

I like knitting shawls and I love knitting big, big shawls. I love them better when knitting with a friend in mind. I think I should devote myself to knit for others and enjoy swapping and bartering. Nothing better than giving a handmade present to someone who would value and take good care of it. Care to join me? :-)

Have a happy weekend!
See you soon

  1. That shawl is amazing, and I love the color, too. And your knitting is perfect. The nupps wouldn't bother me, but all the yarnovers, k2togs and ssks attack my brain and eat away until there is little left. I have to stick to easy patterns with just a bit of lace. I recently finished Therapy, no blog post yet. And now, I'm working on Nurmilintu because I thought I could handle the 9-row lace panels. Haha.
I'm counting the days until October. Surely the 90s°F will leave by then.
Hope your weekend is great. I'm cleaning for company. :)

    1. Thank you! I love lace shawls because they keep my mind busy. When I finish a row and there isn't any stitch left I feel the happiest having accomplished my small goal. Didn't know those patterns and went to check, they are both beautiful! I hope to see Therapy photos on your blog soon. Nurmilintu seems more complicated, never tried that construction before. Good luck!
Here the weather changed. I have been sick for a week now due to the dry wind blowing from inland. It doesn't carry pollen but it feels like my spring allergies are back. If only we could have a little rain...

  9. My feed sometimes gets affected by a glitch or something because this is not the first time to have your post buried under old posts and I just saw this. Luckily I follow you on IG so I am in line with your work. As I said - you chose the perfect color for this beauty. The workmanship is gorgeous - your neat stitches are the source of utmost admiration!

    1. Thank you Maya! My love for this shade of green and lacy shawls came together quite nicely. It took me a lot of effort and undoing but I wanted it to be as perfect as possible since it was not for me.
And don't worry, it sometimes happens to my feed too. The issue must be on their side.
