Going to the Fair square
Cuadradito correcto
English

Going to the Fair
Lana: Katia Fama en violeta (615), verde claro (607) y azul celeste (503), 100% acrílico.
Ganchillo: 3.5 mm.
Tamaño: 12 cm.
Patrón: Going to the Fair de Sadie Cuming (PDF gratuito, en inglés).

No me entusiasma pero me he quedado satisfecha.

Going to the Fair square
Fair Square

A typical granny square, finally! When I opened the forum thread for August square and saw the pictures I couldn't believe it. A plain square to crochet in less than an hour! Of course I got distracted and it took longer but hey, not complaining here: being given something simple to make when you are tired after the holidays is priceless.

The pattern is written, of course —it couldn't be otherwise right? One of these days I will share my thoughts on English-speaking crocheters and their allergies to graphic charts— and suited for beginners. It being a free pattern I shouldn't keep fussing but there are other free patterns out there with plenty of step-by-step pictures and detailed tutorials. Here you are supposed to know your stitches beforehand.

Even if a classic design, it includes a raised vertical stitch that I obviously skipped and replaced: a fptc. What does that mean? A front post double crochet (well, triple in this case) where you work around the previous row stitch instead of inserting the hook in the chain above it. I did it, my square started to shrink and crumple taking shape and I quickly turned back: undid it and replaced it with a simple dc. This square was meant to be flat and flat it came to be! :D

Going to the Fair
Yarn: Katia Fama 100% acrylic in dark purple (615), light green (607), & light blue (503).
Hook: 3,5 mm / US E.
Size: 12 cm (5"
Pattern: Going to the Fair by Sadie Cuming (free PDF)
Modifications: replaced fptc with dc and chose sc for last row.

I may not be overjoyed with it but I am satisfied enough. This time I must confess I used too much Photoshop but neither this acrylic yarn would straighten up after some aggressive blocking nor my camera captures purples properly. I cannot wait to see these all these skeins used up!

Thank you for reading. See you soon!

  2. Your August square looks great! Love photoshop - if only I would take the time to learn it better. As little as people in general like to read instructions, you'd think there would be more charts floating about us. I think the reason there isn't is because so many of us learned to crochet (and knit) from a book. I know I did. I do see the sense in more charts, though, so I'm going to look into it before posting my next pattern. Who knew there was a FREE chart maker at: www.stitchfiddle.com
It's supposed to be positively pleasant temperature-wise tonight. I can't wait.
Hope you're having a great week!

    1. I remember my first cloth was one of your patterns! I loved it and was carefully written and very easy to understand. Good thing about charts, graphics and drawings is you don't need to understand the designer's language as the symbols are international. That is how I am able to crochet Japanese patterns. ;-) Didn't know there was a chart maker, thank you very much for the link! Will add it to my resources page asap.
I spent yesterday's evening at the beach. Can't explain with words how pleasant the sea breeze was. ♥
      Happy September!

  5. Queda bonito, sencillo y bonito.

  6. Well, the square still turned out quite lovely! When I look at your squares it reminds me of just how long it's been since I've even touched a crochet hook, let alone crochet a square. I am living vicariously through your posts. Crochet on, my friend! :-)
