Phone cases

English

I never thought something so harmless like a phone and ebook reader cover would be so controversial. It was an order from a friend who wanted something colourful to protect them from dust and dirt. I looked up, tried and vilely copied some designs I saw on the internet and then ripped them --there was this one like a watermelon slice, I still have the buttons saved for another future project.  In the end I chose a simple and plain cosy that would make the colours pop up:

Smallest cosy is made of the leftover cotton yarn from my Rainbow Lace-Top that I knitted last year. My friend was going to use his phone the most and I chose cotton to make it sturdier, easy to wash and pleasant to the touch in the summer -- very important! Acrylic and wool entirely excluded.

Pattern is very easy. I was inspired by the tote bag I crocheted some years ago from the book Easy-to-crochet Sanrio character accessories by Eriko Teranishi*. You just need to single crochet all the way to the top without joining in the round with a hook smaller than the yarn calls for to make the fabric tighter and crab stitch on the hem.

I am asked this often: "how do you make the colours like that?" I don't. The yarn is dyed that way. I just crochet the same strand of yarn and it makes stripes depending on what colours are next. :-)

The ebook reader cover is bigger, needs a flap and wasn't going to be handled so often so I could use some yarn scraps from blankets and sweaters. I chose the same colours I had used for the Sheep Yoke Baby Cardigan because it had links with the recipient and lavender and brown because I liked them together and were the same type of yarn.

I used Larksfoot stitch (tutorial here). It was my first time crocheting this pattern and liked it very much. I made two flat pieces of the same size and single crocheted them together making a bag, finishing with the flap at the top. Added a white button to be able to close the cover and prevent accidents. ;-)

So where's the controversy in here? I will tell you: they are too cute. Several people were already shocked by the colours I chose. "For a guy?!" is still ringing in my ears. And this guy heard it too. What a shame men are bound to wear navy blue and grey or be branded as...

But I have no regrets! :-Þ

  1. Well, well, well, some people need to practice a little restraint. However, the tongue can no man tame. Argh.
Now, just listen to me. I think the rainbow case is really nice and can be used by anyone. God put the rainbow in the sky and He did not say only the ladies can appreciate the colors. Pffffft. Men are wearing pink shirts and ties these days and there is nothing unmanly about them. Forget the silly comments and enjoy your crafts.
It's really cold today....yay, I'm enjoying crochet zinnia cloths and drinking coffee and hot cocoa!
    Have a great week!

    1. Completely agree with you! It's just a cultural prejudice because, as far as I know, there are some countries where soft pink and lavender are for elderly men's clothing giving a feeling of longevity and wealthiness. Be assured I don't pay attention to these comments and will be crafting my way same as always. ;-)

  3. You say what you want, but women don't take me seriously when they see the cover. Just say that it doesn't 'help with the mood'.

Here I leave an alternative design with more manly motifs.

    1. Hahahahaha --NO.

Then, my dear, those women aren't worth your time and effort. Look harder for better (unprejudiced) ladies. :-)

No li he comprat res de roba blava, jajjaja.
