Teatime

Teatime

In the country

To T. who likes reading about life in Spain through my posts. :-)

Last Sunday, we spent the day in the country invited to my parents' best friend's land.

Vintage tablecloth

As Tea requested, here is a better look of the tablecloth. Very 70s looking, mom bought the fabric, cut and sewed tablecloth and six napkins and made a simple shell crochet edging. Hope you enjoy it!

Hake fillet

A summery dish with the taste of the sea! A good way to start this new and hideous season: hake fillet in a parsley and wine sauce called "green sauce". This recipe is widely known in Spain and can be found on many cooking Spanish websites and books. This one is the recipe we usually cook at home. Spanish only, sorry. I would try to translate it if someone is really interested. ;-) This time we replaced clams with peeled shrimps and used a smaller quantity of wine to make it milder. The tablecloth from the 70's is still as good as new and used often. :-)

Migas Ruleras

There are many ways to cook this dish, which name literally means crumbs. They can be made from breadcrumbs and from flour. This is the recipe my family uses for the flour-made dish.

Ingredientes / Ingredients:

  • ½ kg. harina /flour.
  • 3 vasos agua / cups of water.
  • 1 vaso aceite / cup of olive oil.
  • 1 manojo ajos tiernos / bunch of green garlic.
  • 1 ñora seca / nyora (dried red round pepper).
  • 1 cucharada rasa de sal (sopera) / table-spoonful of salt.
  • Embutido: longaniza roja y blanca, tocino. / Sausages: red and white, pork fat.

Migas Ruleras

Fry the sausages, pepper and garlic with oil and keep aside. Do not throw out the oil.

Migas Ruleras

Put the water in another frying pan and heat. When it's warm, add the flour and salt and knead it with a wooden spatula. When they're done, pour the oil slowly and keep stirring and kneading.

Migas Ruleras

Finally, add the sausages and it's ready! We use to eat migas when it's rainy - something that rarely happens around here. :-)

This time we hadn't pork fat nor green garlic, so we used a couple of cloves of garlic instead. It was delicious anyways. Libby, hope you enjoy this. ;-)

Dried figs

I'm always complaining: I'd like it to rain more often, I'd love to live a in a green place, I wish I lived in England. But when it comes to times like this, I'm grateful I live in the most arid area of Spain. Oranges, almonds, dates, pommegranates and figs, I'm so lucky to have an easy access to these delicacies.

Dried figs
I've already eaten two or three

I don't like fresh figs or early figs, I find their crunchy taste somewhat gross, but I love dried figs, they're my favourite Christmas fruit/candy. If you open them and fill them with an almond, they taste even better, my grandma taught me this and called them "figs with tricks".

A relative of mine come to visit and gave me a basket full of dried figs and almonds. He has dried and boiled them himself to make sure they don't have any visitor (a.k.a. bug) in them. Christmas treats in the middle of the summer? Yay! Oh, and let me tell you, they're absolutely mouth-watering, the sweetest figs I've ever eaten.

Dried figs
Mouth-watering! :-)~

I mean, who wants chocolate when you can have your teeth stuck together with these? :-D

Apple cake

Apple cake

Apple cake
My favourite apple cake!

By popular request, here's my Apple Cake recipe!

Ingredients:
  • 100 g or ½ cup of sugar
  • 100 g or 1 cup of flour
  • 8 g or 2 tea spoons of baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 125 g or ½ cup of melted butter
  • 3 big ‘Golden Delicious’ apples (yellow apples) –they’re about 200-250 g each one.

Of course, you’ll also need:
  • Oven
  • Mixer

Instructions for baking:
  • Heat the oven at 180C/350F.
  • Peel the apples and remove their cores. Cut in pieces two of them and slice the other to decorate the cake.
  • Put sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs and butter in a mixer bowl. Add the pieces of the two apples and mix everything until it becomes mush.
  • Put the mixture in an oven plate and decorate it with the apple slices. Sprinkle sugar on it, if you like. Put the plate in the oven and bake 30-35 mins.

The result is a cake very similar to marzipan in texture, but apple flavoured. You can also use another similar fruit of your taste like pears instead of apples (just be sure to check the weight is the same).

This is my first time translating a recipe. My grammar and my vocabulary are not so good and I also use decimal system measurements, so please feel free to correct me or to ask any question!

If you're going to bake this cake and take photos, don't hesitate and show us! :-)
