(Belated) Three Wise Men

Plurimas maximasque gratias ago!

Do you believe in the Three Wise Men? I suppose not since it is a Spanish custom. But many people in Spain don't believe in them either and have since switched teams and jumped into Santa's because they prefer to receive their presents earlier —from Magi's January 6th to Santa Claus' December 24th. Here, let me tell you: I am not one of those! I rather stick to tradition and patiently wait for my presents on the last day of Christmas Holidays, earning them by behaving reaaally well until then. :-)

However, I haven't received any presents from them for seven years, as I don't write my letter anymore nor have anyone to write it on my behalf. There isn't anything I need or want that I couldn't buy myself, but there are lots of people in need in the world. The effort and time put on my present would be a waste that they should be expending on someone else's. Therefore no letter, no presents —or so I thought!

What a big surprise I had on January 2nd when, a few days before Epiphany (Magi's Day) I got an unexpected parcel in the post. Inside, a green-wrapped package with this note attached: "The Three Wise Men send you this present. Do not open before their Day". This was totally crazy!

As the obedient child I am I didn't cheat —but the note didn't say anything about not being allowed to try and guess. ;-) I spent the next three days very busy touching, measuring, trying to get a peek against the light, sniffing, knocking and gently shaking the package to no avail; pestering the main suspect with messages (who claimed non-guilty till the end); asking family and friends all over the place, eager to know their opinion.

Everybody thought I was pulling their legs and this was just a present I had bought myself —but it wasn't! Only my dear S., almost eleven and a firm believer, was able to understand me and gave me lots of ideas about what the mysterious present could be: a big book, a magazine, an LP, a cookie box...

In the end, Magi's Day came and I could open my present before bursting from excitement: Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible: 260 Exquisite Patterns by renowned Japanese desinger Hitomi Shida. ♥

I had a thousand questions piled up in my mind. How did they know about this book? Where did they find it? Who had written them a letter on my behalf? The main suspect always denied having something to do with this and there was nothing to do for me but believe those words. Then how...?

What do you think? Here I am, a month later, as excited, thrilled and grateful as the first day. Looks like their Majesties want me to pursue a Ph.D. in Knitting and gave me the most difficult book they could find. Of course, I am going to try my best! I would like to publicy show them my gratitude, I don't think I deserve such a great gift, and particularly thank the nice bibulous page who took care of logistics. ;-)

Plurimas maximasque gratias ago!

Let me ask you again: do you believe in the Three Wise Men? I do. I absolutely do. And I know they read blogs and speak Classical Latin.

Happy Belated Magi Kings Day.

    1. You are right, Maya, these designs are simply mesmerizing. I hope to be able to knit them now that I got the book, but I must confess I lost my confidence once I saw how intrincate these patterns are. Time to gather courage and give it a try!

      Besos.

  6. Wow, what a wonderful stitch bible. I know several Japanese ladies whose husbands work at a manufacturing company where my husband also works. All of them are extremely conscientious and ever interested in learning more. It seems everything they do reaches the highest standards, difficulty aside. That's very different from our American culture but very admirable, I think.

    1. Yes, it is a wonderful book indeed. Japanese ladies are very talented! They give their best in everything they try and thus become masters in that area. I was very surprised to know the best lace designers come from Japan, as I thought they wasn't even interested in it, being ancient and outdated European stuff and so. ;-)
