BAMCAL 2016 — May

Gothic Square

Acid Gothic Square

May is ending and so is the yarn season for me. It is also time for the olive trees to blossom and for me to be down with allergies. They will keep me company until the summer scorching heat hits us. This is the beginning of the end: I won't be a person again until September and will miss my yarns and curse the summer everyday for the rest of my life until autumn.

This month's square has proven to be quite difficult.  In fact, I dare to say it isn't suitable at all for beginners. It has a nice 3D effect due to the back row crocheting required as if we were overlaping two different crochet pieces and joining them in some points. And you have to go through this without any chart, just with written instructions! I spent a whole afternoon and evening making this square when I usually need just an hour or even less.

The resulting square is bigger than the pattern states which also suggests a thicker yarn and bigger hook than the ones I used. Trying to match the final measurements with the CAL's previous squares I skipped rnd 10 but even then it turned out ¼" larger.

Good point is it barely needs blocking. The stitches themselves make a strong structure and you just need to stretch the corners a bit to make a smooth square. Nothing like these past months grannies which needed a much more aggressive bocking (and some Photoshop work, ahem) to straighten them.

Gothic Square
Yarn: Katia Fama 100% acrylic in dark purple (615), light green (607), & light blue (503).
Hook: 3,5 mm / US E.
Size: 12 cm (5")
Pattern: Gothic Square by Priscilla Hewitt (PDF file).
Modifications: skipped round 10.

So why a Gothic square for May? What has it to do with it? I don't know. I have found a lady on ravelry who has made a full blanket with this square. I take off my hat! I don't think I could crochet this little one again, much less with a graphic chart.

Have a nice week!

  1. Acid Gothic Square is quite the name for a crocheted square. I wonder how they came up with it, but no worries, it will match your other ones in color, at least.

Sorry to hear you will be in hibernation for several months, and I hope the allergies will not be so bad as usual. I know they can make a body miserable. Wouldn't it be wonderful to live near the ocean and just drink in those breezes for all of the summer months. :)

Wishing you a better-than-average summer season!

    1. The acid part is the nickname I use for the colour scheme but the Gothic title is the author's. Am I the only one who sees a flower, let's say a kind of poppy?

Problem is I actually live near the ocean but we have no cool breeze in my corner of the Mediterranean until September. The summer scorching sun just heats up the water and makes the atmosphere unbearable —very pleasant to take a bath in those calm and warm waters but a sweating pain to the ones living a bit off the shore.

Let's hope this year is better! :-)
