Triangular ground

Torchon lace
Encaje airoso
English

Airy bobbinlace

Although it was going to be just a two-days project I couldn't finish it because the light here at the batcave is even more awful than normal and I can't work with lace like this. If I keep getting closer and closer to the window I will fall on the street! These photos turned out pretty well but one has a few Photoshop tricks hidden for days like this. ;-)

This time I'm working with thick thread (crochet cotton #8) on a towel lace edging, a quick pattern intended to teach me a new ground and how to start and finish the whole thing by myself. Of course, hanging the bobbins was a complete failure because I didn't find any tutorial neither good nor bad in any language about how to start an specific pattern like this. By the time I had found someone to ask about it half the lace had been worked already -- it was simply impossible to undo it and start over.

While working on this I have learnt not only how to do that new ground (triangular) or noticed my ignorance about hanging bobbins correctly. I also learnt that in this enclosed circle there is very little information in the open and the ones who have it only share it in dribs and drabs, worried that the apprentice will learn fast and surpass the master, stepping on their business. It has been a huge disappointment but I will keep learning on my own and become a self-taught lacemaker. I am aware that not everybody behaves like that and thanks to the world wide web I found some nice people who have helped me through e-mails without asking anything in return. Hope this good deed spreads.

    1. Amb quasi tot! Sóc incapaç d'agafar agulla i fil i per cosir qualsevol cosa. Això he d'aprendre-ho de tu. ;-)

  8. Your lace is really pretty, and good for you learning new techniques. I'm glad you were able to find help from some people through emails. There are so few bobbin lace makers; you are already a rare crafter. Did I ever send you a picture from my re-enactment days of the lace maker who came to our trade fairs? He was something of a dandy. :)

    1. Thank you! You have told me about that lace maker gentleman from the re-enactment fair but you never sent me the picture! I would love to see you and share it with my friends. Lace-making from across the ocean? That would be a nice treat to us! :-)

  10. Esto es precioso! Me fascina y me encataria aprender hacerlo.

How sad that you had to experience people who are afraid to share. I always think that sharing is also receiving. You always get tons back after sharing... Good luck in you search for more information!

I agree: you receive when you give. Lace-making is such a wonderful and gratifying experience that it makes me really sad (and sometimes angry) to find this secrecy about the technique. But where there's a will there's a way! No worries about that, I am definitely going for it. ;-)
      Abrazos~

    1. Thank you very much for your visit and kind comment, Lotte.
I am also glad to meet young lacemakers from all over Europe, I feel less lonely on my journey.
Please do try Torchon lace, it is simple but very gratifying. There are so many types of lace out there that we will need ten lives to learn them all! :-)
